Scarab beetle pendant found near the Ukrainian city of Poltava.
During the building of the H-31 motorway in the Poltava district, archaeologists unearthed a remarkable relic. A scarab beetle pendant, manufactured over two thousand years ago in Sarmatian times, was discovered.
The press service of Ukravtodor reported this on Facebook. Employees of the Research Center “Rescue Archaeological Service” in the town of Podgora discovered the treasure, according to reports.
“The pendant ornament in the form of a scarab beetle was found by the staff of the Rescue Archaeological Service research center during archaeological research near the village of Pidgora in Poltava region,” the statement said.
The found pendant is made of dark blue Egyptian faience. Experts speculate that it was part of a glass-veined necklace.
The Egyptian amulet represented life’s rebirth. Scarabs were carried through life and buried to be guided to the other world.
In ancient Egyptian religion, the scarab represented the sun deity Khepri. Scarab amulets were not only worn during life but were also buried in the cemetery to accompany a person in the afterlife, symbolizing the renewal of life. They are more commonly seen in children’s and women’s funerals.
